Self-loading concrete mixers

Drum capacity and concrete output: what to distinguish

The word “capacity” needs context. When comparing a self-loading concrete mixer, ask what volume each figure represents, which model it refers to and under what conditions it is stated.

  • Identify what each figure means.
  • Separate drum volume from mixing and discharge.
  • Ask for the unit and the conditions of the figure.

The same unit does not mean the same measurement

A specification sheet may use cubic metres to describe different volumes. Sharing a unit does not make those values equivalent.

Keep the full name of each specification when preparing a comparison. A reference to drum capacity should not automatically be placed in a column for concrete produced or discharged.

Distinguish the three concepts

Term What to identify
Drum geometric volume
Drum geometric volume
The volume of the container, separate from its working volume.
Mixing capacity
Mixing capacity
The working volume identified in the documentation for mixing.
Discharge capacity
Discharge capacity
The stated volume discharged per batch, together with its conditions.

Ask for these concepts to be clearly distinguished in the specification sheet or quote. If a document uses an ambiguous translation, request the original term and an explanation.

Include the time and scope of the figure

A per-batch figure and an hourly figure have different scopes. Before using a figure to plan a project, identify the time unit, the operations included and the conditions of the information received.

Keep the complete specification

Parameter name, unit, model, configuration and conditions. A figure alone loses some of the information needed for comparison.

This guide does not assign an output figure to any model. For a specific enquiry, consult the documented information for the equipment of interest.

Questions for your next enquiry

  • Which concept does the stated capacity refer to?
  • Does the figure describe a batch or a period of time?
  • What conditions accompany the figure?
  • Is the same definition being used for every model?
  • Which configuration meets the purchasing requirements?

Send these questions together with the model of interest and destination country. The response will be easier to review if each volume is given its full name.

Key concepts

Are drum capacity and discharge interchangeable terms?

Keep them separate. Identify how the equipment documentation defines each parameter before comparing figures.

What if a specification sheet only says “capacity”?

Ask for the concept, unit, model and applicable conditions to be specified.

Does this guide give production figures for a model?

No. This guide organises concepts and questions; equipment values should be checked in the corresponding documentation.
